Jon Hamm enjoyed the "total freedom" he experienced in his animated family comedy Minions.
The Mad Men actor lends his voice to inventor character Herb Overkill in the feature, which centres on small, yellow creatures called Minions who are solicited by Herb to help him take over the world.
Jon loves participating in animation projects because he is able to express his craft in a unique manner.
"You have total freedom," he explained to Collider. "You're not constrained by what you look like or what your hair looks like that day, or what haircut you're stuck with from whatever thing you just finished."
Jon had a lot of input in how to shape his character Herb's personality.
He used the drawings of the persona as his main source of inspiration.
"Part of it, for me, was getting the artist's rendering of the character. I was like, 'Oh wow, that guy looks so cool. I wonder what he sounds like'," Jon recalled. "And then, messing around with voices in your head like a crazy person or like a child basically, like a kid. I'd flash back to being a little kid and watching cartoons and thinking, 'I wonder if I could do that,' and talking to myself, you know, things I do normally in my day-to-day life.
"I talk to my dog. I talk to myself. I talk to myself on elevators and people are like, 'Are you sure you're going to be okay?' It's sort of a process. But no, it's really fun and it's completely creative. And when you're working with people who are also incredibly collaborative too, they're just like 'Go!' So, you get to go."
Minions, which also features the voices of Sandra Bullock and Michael Keaton, reaches American theatres this weekend.
