Taylor Swift has cautioned Nicki Minaj about pitting 'women against each other'.

The Anaconda rapper was nominated in the Best Collaboration, Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Female video categories at the year's MTV VMAs.

But Nicki wasn't happy with just these nominations, as the star felt she deserved a nod for Video of the Year, taking to Twitter on Tuesday to lament about not receiving the recognition she desired.

Taylor, who earned a nod in the Video of the Year category along with other nominees Beyoncé Knowles, Ed Sheeran, Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar, responded to Nicki's tweets, writing a message in an admonishing tone.

'@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..(sic),' the Blank Space songstress wrote.

Nicki quickly replied to Taylor's comments.

The hip hop star made it known she wasn't directly slamming the Shake It Off hitmaker.

Nicki emphasised she was calling attention to racist media.

'I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it,' Nicki tweeted, before responding to Taylor directly. 'Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13 (sic)'

Nicki then pointed to how the media published the comments she made.

The star noted outlets seemed to have attempted to pit her against other stars.

'Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want,' Nicki noted in another tweet.

Taylor seemed to empathise with what Nicki called attention to, but didn't address racism directly in her response to what the rapper said.

'@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on,' Taylor tweeted to her friend.

But Nicki didn't reply to Taylor's message, instead she made some more observations about what took place.

The rapper cited a tweet published by Ryan Seacrest's On Air Twitter account, which reads '@TaylorSwift13 blasts @NickiMinaj for #VMAs jab: 'I've done nothing but love & support you', to make her point.

'Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me. But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a 'jab'? (sic)' Nicki noted. 'I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal &
