Cher has sent more than 180,000 bottles of water to the residents of a Michigan city who haven't had safe water to drink since 2014.
Residents of the city of Flint have struggled to find safe water to drink since 2014, when officials began drawing water from the local Flint River as part of a cost-saving measure. However, the water was not treated properly, which led to metal being corroded in the water pipes contaminating the water.
"This is a tragedy of staggering proportion and shocking that it's happening in the middle of our country," the Oscar-winner said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Cher said she reached out to friend Brad Horwitz, who is an investor in the water company Icelandic Glacial. The company agreed to double Cher's donation, and the bottles are expected to reach the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan on Wednesday (20Jan16).
Speaking on Twitter, Cher asked fellow stars to help the cause, posting on Twitter: "MAYBE FELLOW ARTISTS WILL HELP FLINT,IN ANYWAY THEY CHOOSE.BIG (money emoji) SMALL (prayer emoji) PPL IN"SHOWBIZ"R NOTORIOUSLY GENEROUS& TRULY CARE ABOUT THOSE IN NEED (sic)"
President Barack Obama recently signed an emergency declaration which clears the way for federal aid to reach the two and tackle the water contamination crisis.
