Actress Jane Fonda has joked she comes from a "long line of depressed people", and her co-star Lily Tomlin is her light relief.

The two stars have been friends for years, having previously starred together in classic 1980 film 9 to 5, before reuniting for Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie.

For Jane, 78, getting to work with Lily is as much of a joy now as it was all those years ago.

"I come from a long line of depressed people,” she joked at the Television Critics Association press tour, according to Variety. "(Lily) has a true funny bone. I get to spend time with someone who’s take on everything comes from a place of funny."

Grace and Frankie sees Jane and Lily, 76, play two happily married women whose worlds are turned upside down when they find out their respective husbands are in love with each other and are leaving them.

The series' second season is set to debut in May (16), and while the women are thrilled to be back on screen together, series executive producer Marta Kauffman insists there are no plans to reunite the actresses with their fellow 9 to 5 co-star, country singer Dolly Parton just yet.

"Season two is not the right time,” she said. “I feel like we’re still creating a world, and the world is Grace and Frankie, and characters you want to know and invest in. The minute you bring in Dolly Parton — who I love — then it’s 9 to 5 and you’re taken out of the show.”
